Another Vacant Property Sold

    From overgrown weeds and scrubs, to graffiti on the facade. The owner of Tony's Pizza is hoping to transform the former cosmopolitan center into this....a healthy moneymaking business. Today Utica Mayor Robert Palmieri confirmed the sale of another vacant property owned by the city.

                The Mayor says, "We're taking a building that has been somewhat taken off the tax rolls a building that is need of repair that has been vacant for over 8 years and this year we've been aggressively trying to market the building."

                The mayor says he had others interested in the property and says these plans are a great fit for the city's vision.

                Palmieri added, "I think this was just a natural venue for them, something that was beneficial for them, but more importantly extremely beneficial for the city and what it's going to offer our city."

            Currently the building is in rough condition and a project assistant for tony says it could take hundreds of thousands to restore but they see it as a worthwhile investment.

                Frank Cristiano, the project assistant says, "Putting the money in there will be a no brainer because we expect to get some immediate results from being right next door to the Utica Auditorium itself, part of that Bagg's West downtown area development as well with future sites going up it should sort of buffer what we do."

                The city says it has a three year plan to begin development in Bagg Square West and Frank says they are more than happy to help breathe new life into the City of Utica.

                Cristiano continued, "You can't give up on things that are happening down there, to progress we need more people to get involved. You know we're taking a shot, but sometimes those are the best things that happen when you go out there on a limb and try to extend and do something good."

Now that a cool front has slipped through, and a big ole bubble is building into the region, weather gets very simple, very predictable, and very typical for the time of year. Because the High Pressure bubble is coming from Canada, it will initially bring cool air (mainly felt at night), but it will rapidly warm up (dry air warms much quicker than moist air), so that by the first day of calendar Summer, it will immediately FEEL like Summer! And by the end of the weekend, temps will be challenging the 90F degree mark. Realistically, no real rain chance until Saturday, and even that is small.

Some Residents Are Lowering Their Energy Bills Without Breaking The Bank
Do you want to reduce your energy bills without breaking the bank? Some Utica residents say they learned just that at a free Energy Reduction Workshop this afternoon.
   
EmPower New York and NYSERDA employees told residents about programs that provide free energy improvements and in-home education to help home-owners and renters lower energy usage, and lower their bills.

"There's individuals everyday that I run into that don't apply for HEAP and they're eligible for HEAP, but they're not even aware of it. Do you want to save $50 dollars a month in your pocket? If so, apply for the program. If not, just educate yourself. Why freeze if you don't have to freeze in the winter?" says Michelle Evanson, EmPower New York coordinator.

Search For Missing Infant Continues
The search continues for 9-month-old Levon Wameling, who's been missing for 20 days now. The Utica Police Department says dozens of community members have been offering their assistance in the search for Levon. The young toddler was only reported missing last week, but according to his father, he was last seen on the front porch of his Jay Street home in Utica in late May. The Utica Police Department says after receiving many calls from residents who want to help, starting this morning, they've created a phone-line that will run all this week from 9a to 5p. Community members can call and put their name on a volunteer list. While the UPD has not set up anything just yet, they may call on these volunteers to hand out flyers or to help in an upcoming search.

"It's really gonna depend on how many people we get calling. In order to put civilians out there searching, we have to have some organization so we're researching, we've never done that before, so we're researching techniques because there has to be at least a little bit of training to show what you're looking for and how to search," says Sgt. Steve Hauck, Utica Police Department.

Father's Day Zoo Event
If you're looking for something to do on father's day, the Utica Zoo has a special offer. This Sunday Dads visiting the zoo will get in for free. You can check out the sea lion feeding show just after noon and all the new exhibits. The zoo recently became home to a zebra and three playful ring-tailed lemurs.

"Fathers are very important, not only those that visit but also those that have fathered animals here at the zoo and so we're celebrating fathers by offering them free admission for dads when they come with their family," said Andria Heath, executive director.

The zoo's summer hours are from ten to four-forty-five.
