A competitive state grant called the Cleaner, Greener Communities Program is encouraging communities to develop regional sustainable growth strategies.
The Mohawk Valley region held its first public outreach meeting tonight at HCCC.
The consultants of the program shared information about the regional sustainability plan developed for the area. Leaders and members of the community were also able to ask questions or suggest ideas.
One of the goals of the program is to create a strong connection between sustainability and economic development.
"When you think about issues like where do we invest our infrastructure expansion, if we do that in areas where there is better accessibility to jobs closer to proximity, then people are spending less income on transportation costs," said Rebecca Flora, the Sustainability Practice Leader.
The plan for the Mohawk Valley is scheduled to be completed by the end of March. This will then allow the region to submit their plan to receive grants to move onto the next phase.
