About 12,000 people a year in the U.S. need a bone marrow transplant.

On Thursday, some Central New Yorkers had the chance to help.

SUNYIT hosted a marrow donor event in the afternoon.

The event lets people sign up to be potential donor matches for someone who is sick and in need of a donor.

It's a nationwide event for prospective donors between the ages of 18-44.

"If a person needs a bone marrow transplant, that means that they've really exhausted everything else medical science has," said Account Executive, Michael Garbin. "There really are no more therapies for those individuals, so by having a donor donate his or her own marrow stem cells, they literally could be the only person possible to save another life."
