Last time the pioneers skated with the Cortland Red Dragons it required extra time to determine a winner, but the exciting overtime finish doesn't matter. It was part of a 3 game winning streak but that doesn't matter either. Tonight the Pioneers will host the red dragons in the final regular season game at the Aud...And more important than the victory will be the jersey's Utica will be dawning. Tonight Utica will wear gold to show support for childhood cancer awareness and The Shawn Grady Fund.
12th year head coach Dave Clausen says, "Everybody wants to give back at UC and everybody wants to be a part of the community and I think its a neat way to combine those two things and give back to our community. The Shawn Grady Fund is a local charity that works with sick children in the area and their families."
Shawn Grady was a Clinton native and hockey player who passed away at the age of 16 from cancer complications. This cause hits home for one UC player..Clinton native Mackenzie Roy.
Roy says, "Growing up, knowing the family, everything just about it, the cause is just a good one to support and especially with my team I'm really glad we had the opportunity to do this."
The game jerseys will be auctioned off with all of the proceeds from the game going to The Shawn Grady Fund. The Pioneers raised $2,010 tonight.
