National Eating Disorder Awareness Week's theme is "Everybody Knows Somebody." Organizers hope to prevent eating disorders and body image issues, while reducing the stigmas surrounding eating disorder.

"We see so much in the media about obesity, but we don't see a lot about eating disorders. It's seen a lot on college campuses and high schools and in the Utica area in general. This week brings awareness of what it is and of the different eating disorders that are out there, anorexia and bulimia," says Alessandra Kershaw, outpatient registered dietician at Faxton-St.Luke's Healthcare.

The aim of NEDAwareness Week is to ultimately prevent eating disorders and body image issues while improving access to treatment. Health professionals say eating disorders are serious, life-threatening illnesses - not choices - and it's important to recognize the pressures, attitudes and behaviors that shape the disorder.
