Over fifty hospitals and health care centers are getting a piece of $26 million.

It's part of a Hospital Performance Incentive Program.

Excellus BlueCross BlueShield awarded the money for hospitals to improve in areas such as quality, safety, and patient satisfaction.

Representatives met with the hospitals to talk about their goals, and if they hit those targets, they get the money.

Medicare is going to start penalizing hospitals who don't meet certain performances so this is a way to get hospitals to start toward improving those scores even before the Medicare incentive penalties kick in," said Dr. Frank Dubeck, Chief Medical Officer of BlueCross BlueShield.

The program was started in 2004.

In 2012, 11 hospitals from the Utica, Rome, and North Country area participated.
