Almost 80,000 children in the New York State were victims of abuse and neglect in 2010.
In honor of Child Abuse Prevention and Sexual Assault Awareness month, the YWCA and area officials discussed the impact of these crimes and addressed the work being done today.
One area college student also shared her personal story and explained how she was once a victim of child abuse.
"I think I was a
victim when I was still afraid to speak about it. I'm a survivor now because I
get to say I'm here. I'm a survivor standing here and telling my story and
educating others and freeing myself," explained Margarita Cuevas-Cruz.
The YWCA will be holding its Take Back the Night rally next week to raise awareness about child abuse and sexual violence.
