Nanotechnology Forum

From computer chips to transportation to cyber security nanotechnology is beginning to enter our everyday lives. Some have referred to it as the industry of the future and it may be a way to bring jobs back to the area. University of Albany Associate Professor of Nanoeconomics Michael Fancher says, "I think it's been believed to be the driver for the next industrial revolution. So I think what's unique is because of Governor Cuomo and our state leaders like Speaker Silver, has been to drive or put New York State at the forefront on the global stage in nanotechnology."

                Manufacturing was once a leading employer in our area and some believe that nanotechnology could be the next. Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi says, "No matter what your skill set it, whether it's a two year degree or your advanced engineering degrees there is a job available for you in nanotechnology especially with some of the manufacturing losses that we've seen recently. Those jobs are easily transferable into the nanotechnology field because of the manufacturing process." State Senator Joseph Griffo says, "If we as a region can benefit economically by positioning ourselves properly and insuring that people are educated and trained properly to meet the needs when the opportunity arrives then we will benefit."

            Some experts believe Central New York offers a unique opportunity to grow nanotechnology with the workforce and the training at institutes like SUNYIT. Fancher added, "The ability for a region to not only prepare the workforce but to have that workforce trained on the tools and technologies and protocols that are used in manufacturing is critically important." The future industry is coming and many believe Central New York may be on the forefront of that wave.
