What started off as an afternoon watching the thunderstorm outside her Deerfield home. turned into something unexpected for Nicole Getz and her family.

"We heard a big crack, and we knew it was one of the trees that were around, and I ran to the window....and the tree had already fallen," said Deerfield resident, Nicole Getz.

Around 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Nicole and her family might have missed the actual fall of part of a tree branch outside their home, but it was crystal clear as to what had landed in her yard.

"We saw that the limb had come off the tree and our lines go directly across the yard and it took everything out," said Nicole.

"It was scary at first, but then when we saw what was going on and called everybody, it wasn't so scary after all," said Nicole's daughter, Danielle.

The Getz family was without power after they say lighting struck part of the tree branch.

Nicole says because of where she lives, having something like this happen, keeps her on her toes.

"A lot of limbs come down all the time, so it's always a concern wondering which one it's going to hit because we are very woody up here, and a little more rural than in the city," said Nicole.

If you do come across storm damage, National Grid has some safety tips:

-Don't touch any downed wires, or try to lift them to get your car underneath.

-If you see a downed wire, make sure to call it in

-If you don't have power, and have a generator, make sure your fuse box is turned off, and if you have one, keep your generator outside
