Utica firefighter Travis Maurine pleaded guilty today in Oneida County Court. The twenty-five year old will spend 6 months in jail and five years on probation for second degree vehicular assault. Maurine admitted to drinking and driving after a holiday party and causing a two-car crash. He also pleaded guilty to assault in the third degree as a result of the other car he crashed into. Maurine's attorney says a plea deal was the best option. Defense Attorney George Aney says, "Nevertheless I was satisfied that if there were a trial the jury could conclude that there was sufficient consumption of alcoholic beverages so as to find if not infer on a common law basis the element of intoxication is important to here." Maurine is due back in court in the beginning of august. Currently he has been suspended without pay from the Utica Fire Department.
