The Utica City School District recently found out it may not be getting the late tax revenue it's owed by the city until next year.

Utica is required to pay the school district all delinquent school taxes. But, the common council recently learned it has 2 years to do so under state law.

Council President William Morehouse says the city had been paying late taxes on a 1-year basis but it won't be making the payment until next year because of the city's own cash flow issues.

"Corporate Council has told us we only have to make the school board whole in 2 years so we actually have 2 years to pay any delinquents taxes that we have. And unfortunately, the city can no longer pay that. And so we're gonna take the 2 years and the law says we can take 2 years to pay the school and that's what we're gonna do," says Morehouse.

Morehouse says the city is going to do what it needs to do to protect taxpayers and abide by state law. He says the Council has had little talk with the school board but he says he hopes to resolve the issue with an amicable resolution.
