United Way Graffiti Busters

Volunteers are cracking down on unwanted graffiti around the city of Utica. June 21st is the United Way's 'Day of Action.' It's also the Summer Solstice - the longest day of the year. Volunteers say it's the best day to give back with the most daylight hours.
"We have a part to play in making our city better and we need to be willing to do the work to keep it great- and it's really fun when you do it," says Brenda Episcopo, United Way Executive Director.
United Way volunteers became graffiti busters today. They took on unsightly graffiti around Utica and director Episcopo says the longest day of the year is also the best day to volunteer.
"The most opportunity to volunteer and around the country local united ways organize projects with volunteers to make an impact with their communities. This year we are doing 'Graffiti Busters," says Episcopo.
"Graffiti as we know is all over Utica and for such a beautiful city, we want to make sure we're doing everything we can to preserve it and better the community and this is just one way to do that," says volunteer Halina Lotyczewski.
Episcopo says volunteering is for the young and old alike - and giving back is a message that stays with people their whole lives.
After a day's worth of painting, the graffiti busters covered walls at Roosevelt Elementary, the Asian Market Building on Oneida Street, and 6 walls along James Street in Cornhill.
