Traveling on the 4th of July

According to AAA, it's going to be a very busy 4th of July. Many travelers plan to take advantage of the long weekend. And with the price of gas dropping $61 cents a gallon since its peak in April - this means you can expect to see a lot more car traffic this holiday week.
Whether in the car, or on the train, if you're planning on traveling this 4th of July - keep in mind - so are many others.
"We're expecting, actually we're gonna tie a 10 year old record for the amount of people traveling this 4th of July holiday," says Ed Welsh, Utica AAA.
With the holiday falling on a Wednesday - Welsh says this expands the vacation period from 5 days to 6 - and that will mean more travelers on the roads - but he says there is a bright side.
"You end up with a spread of departure dates. The good side of that is it limits congestion, so you'll see a lot less congestion on the road this weekend, mainly because of that spread out period," says Welsh.
Gas prices are down and the timing is up. AAA says over 35 million travelers will take to the road - they say driving by car will be the most popular mode of transportation this 4th of July.
"I, like many other Americans will be out driving this 4th of July because the prices are low," says traveler Jim King.
"Right now the gas prices are better then they been before, so it kinda all made sense to drive up and then we have our car when we wanna go places, and hang out with friends while we're here," says traveler Kelly Tomaselli.
But the NYDOT wants to remind people that holiday vacations don't mean vacation for everyone.
"We will have contractors out there working through the holiday weekend or week, and we really would like people to take their time through the work zones, and we'll get them through, and they'll be on there way," says Joe Piccola, NYDOT.
