Empty downtown windows in Utica will soon become miniature art galleries.

The Downtown Utica Development Association, or DUDA announced its "Art in Windows" project today. The group says it's trying to call attention to vacant buildings and increase downtown foot traffic while creating additional exhibition opportunities for area artists.

"What we really wanna do is get people down here. There's a lot down here that people just aren't aware of, so we want to create that foot traffic and not just locally, we wanna really create an environment with the art in the windows, with the music events that are going to take place downtown, we wanna create an immersion of that and we wanna get people downtown to see what it really can be about," says Rod Wilson, Downtown Utica Development Association member.

Wilson says he hopes the project will create a street-scape featuring wall paintings, murals, and sculptures. The program is finishing up 7 storefronts but they hope to keep spreading art around the city.

Artists interested in showcasing their work are asked to contact DUDA at downtownuticany@gmail.com to submit their work or to ask questions. A review panel will select the artists whose work will be displayed and match them up with an empty downtown window. The "Art in Windows" program will debut on September 1, 2012. The first application deadline is July 31, 2012, for September/October exhibits.
