Mayor Palmieri said, "We will never forget the family.  They will always be in our memory."   He of course was speaking about the Santiago family.

A fire burned through a home on Schuyler Street in Utica around 9 in the morning; Just over a year ago.  The entire house was engulfed in flames as crews tried desperately to rescue people and get the fire under control.  Despite their efforts 4 people died in the fire.

Today, the home at 935 Schuyler street is now just a pile of rubble. The demolition happened this morning around the same time the house burned last may, as Utica Mayor Robert Palmieri, city officials, and members of the fire department gathered to watch.

Before it was taken down, the building was a constant reminder to Nancy Santiago and her family of the heart wrenching tragedy.  Nancy says, "Look at what happened to my daughter.  I never thought she was going to die.   I lost my daughter and my three grandsons."

Messages of remembrance were posted on the walls in memory of the victims... They came down along with the rest of the house to give Nancy, her surviving family and neighbors as much "closure" as possible in this case of momentous  loss.

Nancy told Eyewitness News to tell viewers this:  "Cherish your family.  Be proud of them.  Always care for them and be there for them.  Because you just never know."
