UPD will use federal grant to keep an eye on criminal offenders and purchase equipment

The Utica Police Department is getting some extra money.
The $40,000 federal grant that will help buy equipment and keep an eye on sex offenders.
UPD Chief Mark Williams says his team will buy night vision goggles and drug testing kits.
"What it allows us to do with these unannounced home visits is to verify that the address that they are giving us is correct and that they are still living there. And it gives us the opportunity to see that they are not using the internet for unlawful purposes," said Chief Williams.
The UPD received money from the Department of Justice. The Chief stresses how the money can help them track some sex offender. There are 280 registered sex offenders in Utica.
