We told you last night, about funding made available through the state
to use solar power by businesses and manufacturers. Today Assemblyman
Anthony Brindisi is urging businesses in our area to take advantage of
the solar power program - that will be able to significantly cut power
costs.
But some area businesses are ahead of the trend. Herkimer Diamond KOA Campground has 3 solar lodges that run completely independent of outside energy sources. The campground operator says the solar lodges give people the fun camping experience, while teaching them all about green technology
"It's fully occupied with energy savings, it's fully occupied green componentry, and yet it gives the camper such a splendid way to learn about nature, alternative energy, how to improve their own carbon footprint, and at the same time, just have a great time," says Renee Scialdo Shevat, campground operator.
Shevat says the KOA solar lodge complex is the first of it's kind on the continent. And the solar powered lodges are made up of "green" materials, ranging from bamboo flooring, to LED lighting to a dual-flush toilet.
