It's been a hot topic for years, but as we told you yesterday, the battle over the Herkimer County jail is now closer to a resolution. Recently the village adopted a zoning ordinance trying to stop the county from building the facility. But in last night's supreme court ruling, justice Erin Gall ruled in favor of the county, bringing the county one step closer to building the correctional facility. Eyewitness News spoke with Herkimer residents and reactions are mixed.

"The issue has been carried on long enough, the jail should be built," says Dominick Scalise, Herkimer resident.

"I can't see why we need a jail and they say it's gonna help the taxpayers? Bologna. I think it's gonna be a big problem for the taxpayers," says Harold Blovat, Ilion resident.

The county now has 45 days to apply for sewer and water access, and if the village doesn't appeal, the county says they will be able to move forward with purchasing the site. But the village attorney anticipates the village will try to appeal.
