Odd-Even Parking Signs Debate

By: Rachel Polansky
Updated: August 27, 2012
It's been just a few months since the Utica Police Department announced an increase in fines for parking tickets. But the price hike is not what's bothering some East Utica residents. They say the signs are confusing and misleading. But the Utica Police Department says these signs have been used for decades and this is not the case.

"Today is an odd day. It's August 27th at 9am in the morning. I would have to park on the side of the street that it says even days until 11am and then have to move my car and if I forget to move my car, I would end up getting a ticket. But if I parked on the side because it's an odd day, I would still get a ticket because it's before 11 am," says Alicia Heath, East Utica resident.

"It has to do with garbage pickup, street cleaning, snow removal, so that's why it's not 1 particular side of the street is designated as parking," says Sgt. Steve Hauck, Utica Police Department.

The Utica Police Department says odd-even parking was implemented because many streets don't have off-street parking - and without these signs, residents would not be able to park on the street at all.
