Every couple has the special place. For Rick and Wendy Short, its not your typical romantic restaurant. Rick and Wendy have been coming to the McDonald's on Route 5 in New Hartford for over 30 years. Eyewitness News sat down with them as they reminisce over their final meal before their favorite McDonald's gets rebuilt.
"Our first son was probably almost 2 years old and we used to come every Saturday," says Wendy Short, McDonald's lover.
"This is a place where we spent better part of our lives, even before we were married; dating, raising our children and now as adults," says Rick Short, McDonald's lover.
Wendy says the family shares many memories at the New Hartford Mickey D's. She remembers a tradition with her son.
"He used to call it e-i-e-i like the song "Old McDonald." And so we always made sure he took a bite of hamburger, then had a french fry, then a bite of hamburger because he would've eaten the fries first like everyone else that comes to McDonald's," says Wendy.
Rick says he says he's been to hundreds of McDonald's around the world but nothing compares to his hometown favorite.
"It was great for us then, and after a while, you develop an affinity for it and you just keep coming back," says Rick.
"I would love to go back to a McDonald's in the 70s and relive that experience, but that's impossible so we keep coming to the same one all the time," says Wendy.
"McDonald's changes, but we don't," says Rick.
Rick and Wendy say old or new, they'll never stop coming to their favorite restaurant.
McDonald's employees say the construction of the new 4,317 square foot restaurant will have site improvements consisting of new dumpster enclosure/shed, asphalt parking utilities, landscaping, lighting, and signage.
