Carl's Story of Being Molested as a Boy Scout

Carl, who's now 54 years old, joined the Scouts here in our area when he was around 10-years old. He wanted to tell his story, but because of the shame he says he still feels, he asked us to protect his identity - at least for now.
This is Carl's Story - one you'll see only on Eyewitness News.
Carl: You know I was having a great time. You are out in the woods. You are given alone time to do stuff, learn on your own rather than have someone show you. Until one day the scout master knew i was having a hard time getting one of my badges to get the next rank. We were on a camp type thing and he called me into his tent and started talking to me and put his arm around me and started fondling me. I knew nothing about sex at that age. After the scout meeting we would go in his car he would perform oral sex on me, it went on for a couple years there are a lot of badges you gotta get.
Joe: If you saw him on the street would you say anything.
Carl: I dunno if id hit him, or just wanna completely forget about it. I felt kinda guilty 'cause I told my mother not to tell my father and not to tell anybody cause I felt I could handle it
Joe: Why do you think they never confronted the scout master?
Carl: Well....i dunno.
Joe: How do you feel now, as a grown man, knowing they didn't.
Carl: Well I wish that they did cause it probably happened to other kids.
Message from Joe Parker: If you are a minor and feel you are being mistreated with or "touched" inappropriately, do not be ashamed. It is not you're fault. Please have the courage to make it stop. Call the police or contact the Oneida County Child Advocacy Center. It's not a secret. It's a crime.
