An area elementary school could be on it's way to winning a state-wide "Recycle-Bowl" competition.

Hart's Hill Elementary in Whitesboro competed against 30 other schools in the state to collect the most recyclable material.

The school collected almost 3500 pounds of recyclables during the four weeks of the contest.

Along with Hart's Hill, John F. Kennedy Middle School in Utica also participated in the contest, which was all meant to increase environmental awareness.

"The kids are so excited. They keep asking did we win? We really wanted to teach the kids at a young age about recycling. We wanted to spread the message not only in schools, but for them to take it home," said Erin Huggins, a teacher's aide at Hart's Hill Elementary.

The winners will be announced in February and will be awarded $1,000.
