After a nearly year-long debate, Oneida County and Onondaga County announced some big news today.

Oneida County executive Anthony Picente and Onondaga County executive Joanie Mahoney signed the contract that will regionalize Oneida County's medical examiner services. The contract includes services including certifying cause of death and performing autopsies. And the county executives call it "a true consolidation of services."

"Everybody's been talking about needing to do things like this, but they've actually done it. This is a big day for Oneida County it helps us in Onondaga County because we have this facility we've invested in and now we have a broader base to serve," says Joanie Mahoney, Onondaga County executive.

"Not just for law enforcement and prosecution, but for families. It really takes a system that has been fractured, that has been antiquated, and puts it into a modern, state of the art, accredited facility," says Anthony Picente, Oneida County executive.

The contract takes effect on January 1st. And includes five assistant forensic investigator positions, which have been filled by Oneida County residents who will be serving as Onondaga County employees.
