Herkimer County Legislator Wants To Reinstate Sales-Tax Revenue To Municipalities

Some Herkimer County legislators want to reinstate sales-tax revenue that was previously split among area municipalities. Back in 2006, the Herkimer County legislature agreed to take away $600,000 dollars of that tax from it's municipalities to cover the rising costs of medicaid.

One county legislator says the sale tax distribution needs to be discussed again so municipalities can see their money again. But The chairman of the board says there have been discussions, and they must wait to see the outcome of the Herkimer County Jail decision.

"The savings that we would realize in building the county jail coincidentally are around $600,000 dollars. So if we could save that $600,000 dollars and build the county jail, we would be able to redistribute that 1% back to the city, the villages, and the towns," says Vincent Bono, Chairman of Herkimer County Legislature.

"I think it's wrong on many levels for him to hold all the municipalities hostage to try to make Herkimer support a plan that our constituents don't want," says Gary Hartman, Herkimer County Legislator (D-Herkimer).

Chairman Bono says he hopes to make progress in the next year, but he says the reinstatement will tie in with the decision to build the Herkimer County Jail.
