It appears to be good news for the state of New York.

Crime rates have dropped this year compared to last.

According to the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services, crime has decreased almost four and a half percent.

Oneida County District Attorney, Scot McNamara says the percentage is a noticeable decline.

"It's a significant decrease in crime when you look at the actual numbers of crimes being committed. There's a lot of things that go into the results," said McNamara.

"It seems like a lot, I mean it seems like a large drop. Hopefully it's across the board throughout the state, and not just the city," said Utica resident Michael Fiore.

Although the crime rate is down, McNamara says that it can go right back up as easily as it went down.

He cautions that any major incident could increase that rate.
