Columbus Day is a nationally recognized holiday, and celebrations took place around the nation.

Many know that Christopher Columbus made his arrival to our land in 1492, but one Schuyler resident explains why this holiday is so important to him.

"I think it's great that we honor him, because it wasn't for him, there wouldn't be a United States of America," said Peter Cardone.

Thousands also celebrated the holiday in New York City at the 67th Annual Columbus Day Parade.

There were marching bands, colorful floats, and flags raised to recognize the day.

It is hailed as the world's largest celebration of Italian-American culture.

Peter Cardone also says he feels some do not think that Columbus was a religious person, but he says he was.
