Utica college added field hockey eleven years ago and since then the pioneers have never won the regular season championship, until this year. Now the pioneers are set to host the empire eight tournament in hopes of making a run at the national championship. Assembling a schedule can sometimes dictate how a season might go. For the bombers the 2011 schedule appeared nearly insurmountable. But when the dust finally settled on the regular season Utica's tenacity brought them all the way to number one. "We play a very competitive schedule, you know so, every year every team we play it's a competitive game, you that's what makes college sports so fun, there's very few teams that are really down and they're very few teams that are really up so every single games a battle." The Pioneers battled all year long until they were rewarded with hosting the empire eight tournament and seniors like Rebecca Corsones knows what this means to Utica College. "I wasn't sure we could do it but as the season start and progressed, it really became very realistic and it's the first time we've ever done it, it's the first time Utica's every hosted, so it's pretty remarkable to be a senior and to be able to do that." This year as in years past Utica had games throw in throughout the week but this week the pioneers have five days to practice before Saturday's game. The Pioneers know how important playing at Gaetano Stadium is. "It's a huge advantage for us, we don't have to travel, we play right here on our home field and it's really exciting that were hosting this tournament but at the end of the day we want two more wins this weekend."
