It opened in 1928, with the silent movie "Ramona" as its first presentation, but now it's much more than just a grand cinema.

"The Stanley is a center for the community's arts and entertainment," says Executive Director Joel McKissick of the theater, "the theater is for the community."

Together with the Broadway Theater League, the Stanley has worked for the past two years to switch up its show choice and cater to all audiences.

And the recent renovations have allowed that.  The new Stanley allows for bigger and better productions.  In addition to more stage space, it's easier for shows to unload and set up, which lowers cost- and ticket prices.  "Frankenstein," the first-ever tech show took place here recently, soon to be followed by "American Idiot."  McKissick says this means increased business in Utica, and a more promising future for the downtown area.

And McKissick, being fairly new to the Stanley, has a clear vision for what he would like it to be for the community. "I want to support the Utica Symphony, I want to support the Broadway Theater League, and Munson Williams," he says. "I also want to support local theater groups and local music."
