Change can often be hard to accept, but Main street in Herkimer has changed over years and some in Herkimer feel it hasn't been for the better. In fact one group is making an effort to change the face of downtown Herkimer. And one business owner knows what a new downtown would do for her business. "People don't like to travel too far down main street, people are afraid of main street and I believe if we start bringing more people here and we start opening up the community, gosh it could only help our business." And she isn't the only optimistic one, others know what Herkimer needs to revitalize Main Street. "The business could be better, the people are hurting, it's hard to start a business you know but they do what they can do you know and it always was a booming place but now it's gotta get turned around again." "You know with the economy and everything I think the tourism part should be look into a lot. Maybe more hiking trails, biking trails to bring the summer crowd here." Yet others are not completely convinced things will change in downtown Herkimer. "I've been here over 80 years, I don't think it will ever change, its just always the same, the business is all out and everything. I don't think it will ever change, there's no business no work nothing around here, it'll never change." Part of Herkimer now's plan is to bring in an expert to provide suggestions for the committee. Based on those suggestions the committee will present a plan to the village. Other business owners recognize Herkimer isn't the only village to have this problem. "You know a lot of downtown main streets are in economic disrepair and they need to have some type of an infusion, something to revitalize them."
