As the temperatures start to drop, many people start to crank up the heat.

Eyewitness News talked to an expert about important safety reminders for space heaters.

When you hit the stores to purchase your heater, there are some things to make sure you do to prevent any hazards.

They come in all shapes and sizes, from small to large, but there are three general rules to follow for every space heater.

"First, plug it directly into your wall socket, don't use extension cords," said Home Depot Associate, Fred Fazekas.

Fazekas says extension cords can overheat, causing a fire. But, he says if you absolutely have to use one, make sure it's 15 AMP.

And two other big safety tips with space heaters is that they should not be in the bathroom or they should not curtains over them, or be placed near a window.

Fazekas also says the small space heaters can do the job, but the safest heaters aren't too frugal friendly.

The pricier ones can run around $200.
