But one young woman in Utica has taken a giant leap to better the community.
Eyewitness News talked to the youngest Councilwoman, Samantha Colosimo.
She says she is eager to get to work, and ready to bring some fresh new ideas to the table.
While she may be a newcomer to the council, she's no stranger to Utica.
"I graduated from Utica City Schools, I went to Utica College, I'm working in the Utica City School District, and I want to live in this area. I have a ton of family that's from here," she said.
It could be nerve wracking as a young woman serving on the council, but not for Samantha.
"I ran, I did what I had to do. I had a lot of support from a lot of people, and obviously my whole thing was at the end of the election, that's when we'll see who was meant for the spot," said Colosimo.
And according to the voters, it was Samantha who was right for the job.
After being elected, she says she's already brainstormed ideas to better the city.
She feels her age can really be an advantage to the council.
"I'm really looking forward to working with everybody. I've already put in pieces of legislation of resolutions. It's just going to go like an everyday routine for me," she said.
And her advice to the hopeful young leaders for the future, "I think you have to look at it as a new face for our generation. You have to get up and stand for yourself, so hopefully I'll be a stepping stone to a lot of people that would like to run," said Colosimo.
