Release by the New Hartford Police:
New
Hartford Police are investigating recent overnight thefts from cars and
trucks while they are parked in residential driveways.
The thefts have been occurring for about the last five nights between
midnight and dawn. Neighborhoods in Chadwicks, Washington Mills, Oxford
Road, Bolton Road and Paris Road have
been affected. The thieves are walking from driveway to driveway
checking for unlocked car doors. Once an unlocked car is found the
interior of the car is ransacked and valuables stolen. Only one locked
car has been broken into. That car had a window smashed
allowing access into it. Over the past five days about twenty five
complainants have been filed reporting that cars parked in driveways had
been entered.
Police believe that the thieves are working in a team of two or three
individuals. They have been stealing GPS units, loose change, brief
cases, gym bags, purses and jewelry.
Residents can protect their property by keeping valuables out of sight and by keeping car doors locked.
Police are asking residents to be alert to suspicious activity such as
people walking at late night or early morning hours, people walking in
yards and driveways, car alarms being
activated, security lights turning on and barking dogs. Any suspicious
activity should be immediately reported to police.
New Hartford Police can be called 24 hours a day by dialing 911 to
report in-progress thefts or suspicious activity. Anyone having
information regarding this activity is asked to
call New Hartford Police at 733-6666. That information will be kept
confidential.
