Friday the 13th: Unluckiest Day of the Year?
Some people take extra precautions on Friday the 13th, and some folks really look forward to it. In 2012, the 13th falls on a Friday three times, as opposed to the typical two times.
For the first time since 1984, the three Friday the 13ths--are exactly 13 weeks apart. The number 13, and Friday, are frequent in religious and mythical traditions, according to USA-today. In the Christian religion, Jesus Christ died on a Friday and 13 people attended the last supper. The medieval knights of Templar were imprisoned on Friday the 13th. For many pagans, they say, 13 is actually a lucky number, as it corresponds with the number of full moons during the year. And although not part of any historic tradition, rapper Tupac Shakur died on Friday the 13th. Eyewitness News asked central New Yorkers how they felt about the 13th and superstitions in general.
"I will have to admit, yea, I am superstitious," says Melody Carletta, "I do try to take extra precautions," she says, "depends on who I interact with during the day."
Melody Carletta says she has to take those precautions today especially, as she's a 911 operator for Oneida county. "We get weird calls every day, but we seem to get more coming out on the 13th," says Carletta.
But most central New Yorkers we spoke with say Friday the 13th is the same as any other day. "I've never had a problem with Friday the 13th and I don't expect to have one today or in the future," says Rome resident Leonard Summa.
