For people looking to start up a small business, but don't know where to start got some answers tonight.

Tuesday night's meeting was a follow-up to a forum held about a month ago by The Cornhill Neighborhood Association.

Tuesday's subject was all about buying properties.

One Cornhill resident says her business is already up and running, but she's looking to expand.

"Buying properties is a good idea, we've got a lot of vacant ones so getting them back on the tax rolls will be a great idea," said Kathy Sykes.

Tuesday night's follow up forum gave Kathy a chance to learn about guidelines for buying properties, and how to take the right steps with her business.

She says taking in all the information is helpful to both current and future small business owners.

"It's a lot of help if you want to start off. You have a lot more advice, people who can give you advice who have been there before. I really just jumped in and kinda didn't know what to do, where as now there is more help and a lot more people with advice," said Sykes.

To provide that advice, Cathy Mack with The Urban and Economic Development and Urban Renewal answered questions about buying properties.

"It makes the process a little easier, it gets the information out there to people to realize there are properties available that can help turn neighborhoods around or start up properties for small businesses for people that might now have a lot of money to originally invest  in it," said Mack.

After hearing the advice, Kathy Sykes says she now knows what it takes to expand her business.

"I realize that there is a lot more out there then what I was aware of when I started. I wish I had known everybody, and had more help," said Sykes.

The Cornhill Neighborhood Association meets on the 3rd Tuesday of every month.
The meetings are held at The Thomas M. Lindsey Memorial Public Safety Center at 230 James St. in Utica.

Taxpayers of Herkimer School District will decide if area library will change funding structure

As taxpayers of the Herkimer School District vote on the school's budget, they'll also decide whether or not an area library will change its funding structure.

Basloe Library is asking residents to approve them to become a library district, meaning the taxpayers will vote on the library's budget and its board of trustees.

In return, it will provide more funding for the library.

"We're looking to get $270,000 out of this vote. That will restore our funding to where it was five years ago. This is what it's about- to restore our funding," said Library Director, Lesley Paul.

The library is currently funded by the Village of Herkimer. Over the years, officials say the village had to cut contributions to the library. By becoming a library district, funding will be coming from the taxpayers within in the school district.
