Marshall Jackson was found guilty of murder on Friday. After closing statements from the prosecution and defense the jury came to that verdict in less than a half hour. They found Jackson guilty of murder, criminal possession of a weapon and stolen property.
Defense Attorney Rebecca Wittman says she feels the jury reached a decision when they first saw the surveillance video days ago of the brutal crime. The prosecution presented a video Tuesday in court showing Jackson beating and shooting to death Anthony Garner. Wittman tried to prove however, that the motive behind the murder was not as brutal as the crime. Prosecutor Joseph Saba explains, "Her argument to the jury is that he's a former combat veteran and he saw a gun on the victim, that's the allegation," he says, "His military training came back to him and he inflicted the fatal wounds on the victim."
Saba says although Wittman presented a strong defense, he can't accept that argument to justify Jackson's actions. "It paints our veterans in a poor light that they're nothing but robots that are incapable of human thought and reasoning." Wittman says while she can understand Saba's point of view, she says there's something to explain Jackson's behavior.
Saba feels justice has been served for the victim and his family. He says the investigation is ongoing involving the others seen in the surveillance video. Jackson is set to be sentenced March 15th.
