Two Herkimer County residents are facing drug charges after they were reportedly found with a controlled substance, commonly known as bath salts, a synthetic drug formulated by a blend of substances.

24-year-old Katrina Pope and 21-year-old Ricky Coffin are charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance.

According to the New Hartford Police, officials found scales, cutting agents and packaging materials that would be used to package the drug.

Pope and Coffin were arraigned in New Hartford Village Court and are in Oneida County Jail in lieu of $3,000 bail. Both are scheduled to reappear in court on March 15th.

Reports say the chemical compound found in bath salts produces a high called Methylenedioxypyrovalerone, also known as MDPV.

MDPV can produce a number of dangerous reactions when ingested, snorted or injected into the body. The reactions include paranoia, hallucinations, delusions, agitation and suicidal thoughts. Police say hospitalization or death can result from its use.
