April is also National Organ Donor Month.

Did you know New York State has one of the lowest number of registered organ donors?

To raise awareness, St. Elizabeth's Medical Center's Donation Council  is holding an event where Central New Yorkers can register.

A representative from the Center for Donation & Transplant says there are various misconceptions regarding organ donations

"I think another myth is that organ donation is a frequent thing. There are less than 10,000 donations each year... a lot of people think there is millions. It's an infrequent thing. There are people dying each day because there are not enough donations," explained Andrew Sigond, a specialist for the Center for Donation & Transplant.

According to the CDT, more than 9,000 people in New York State are waiting for an organ transplant.

People can register to be a donor tonight at St. Elizabeth's until 8 o'clock.
