Governor Cuomo announced an initiative that will provide assistance for low-income New Yorkers in this hot weather. Anyone who has a condition that poses a serious health risk can receive air conditioners through the federally- funded Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP.
"We're able to provide people without an air conditioning space with a cool space so they can maintain in there home so they don't have to go to a cooling shelter. And, we look forward to helping the people that are in need," says Noreen Hartung, Mohawk Valley Community Action Agency.
New York State has set aside $3 million dollars for the program. Agencies are accepting applications to determine eligibility and oversee the installation of the air-conditioning units.
