Phoenix Fire Camp For Teenage Girls

By: Rachel Polansky
Updated: July 16, 2012
The Fire Service Women of New York are celebrating girl power all week long.

Phoenix Fire-Camp is holding a week-long overnight camp for teenage girls interested in fire and emergency services. The director says it's a great way to teach girls what emergency services is all about.

"I came out to camp this week to get the full experience of firefighting and see if it is something I want to do," says Angela Ward, camper.

"There's not a lot of women in fire and emergency services - This camp gives them the opportunity to meet other young women like themselves, interested in the same things, as well as be taught by women firefighters and EMTs from across New York State," says Anna Schermerhorn-Collins, Camp Director.

The girls will learn skills in various aspects of fire and emergency services including climbing portable ladders, putting out a propane car fire, search and rescue tasks in smoky conditions - And each camper will be CPR certified.
