A former Utica firefighter has been sentenced to five year's probation with the first six months serving time in Oneida County Jail.
Travis Maurine pleaded guilty earlier this year after a near-fatal car crash almost killing his then girlfriend.
Maurine told officials his girlfriend was driving at the time of the crash back in December of 2010.
The District Attorney's Office says it took a lot of investigative work to close this case.
"The public played a significant role in switching the focus from Kate as the driver as Mr. Maurine as the driver. Without the public coming forward and saying we saw that he was behind the wheel at some point prior to the crash this case would have gone nowhere," says Assistant District Attorney Stacey Paolozzi.
Maurine has been terminated from the Utica Fire Department as of June this year.
During his probation, Maurine is not allowed to drink alcohol or obtain a driver's license.
