Back to School: United Way Helping Students

It's that time of year again where some students are looking forward to or dreading school supply shopping.
But, some say one of the most important things is being prepared for school.
"If you can get a kid excited about going to school they are going to want to do better when they are there. I think having something special or new picked out I think that would help," explained Mary Ann Desanctis.
Mary Ann Desanctis of New Hartford says giving students tools that they need can help them focus better.
She would know first-hand being an inner-city school district teacher.
"I have to buy things for my students also so the combination of three kids plus me supplying for quite a few students adds up," said Desanctis.
Which is why Mary Ann is making her daughters stick to a list.
But, how about students who are in need of school supplies, but can't afford them?
One area organization is holding its 2nd annual Back-to-School supply drive to give students the tools needed for a successful school year.
"We know there are a number of kids out there starting school unprepared. It's a terrible feeling walking in the first day of school and not having the tools to participate in school," said Executive Director of the United Way of the Valley and Greater Utica Area, Brenda Episcopo.
The United Way of the Valley and Greater Utica Area raised over half a ton of supplies last year. This year the organization says there is a growing need.
The United Way is looking for basic supplies like paper, pencils, erasers, crayons and binders. And all donations will stay here in the community.
"To actually get those supplies in your hands and walk into school with them your confidence soars. And that is a really great way to start the school year. Confident and prepared. That's what we are aiming for here," said Episcopo.
The drive is being held throughout the month of august with ten drop off locations.
And residents can even donate via text message.
