This act gives the county of Herkimer the go-ahead with construction of the facility - on the state approved former P&C site on Route 28 in the village. The commission's decision also amends the current zoning law in the village which has been prohibiting construction of the facility.
"Our jail can house 41 inmates a day. The new jail will be built for 220. We think that there will be a few more jobs and you'll keep the jobs that are already here. That's an issue too and it's very important," says Jim Wallace, Herkimer County Administrator.
Supreme Court judge Erin Gall has yet to rule on the suit, but Wallace hopes they will hear a decision in the coming weeks.
