One area youngster hopes to one day build his own carnival rides

At just eleven-years-old, one Floyd youngster has built over 30 carnival rides with K'NEX pieces.

Eyewitness News Reporter Jennifer Lee shares his story of how he fell in love with connecting and building the toys.

Dylan Grems has been building carnival rides with K'NEX pieces most of his childhood, reading instructions, putting the toys together, spending time in his grandpa's basement and letting his imagination run wild.

"I used to love fair rides. They were my favorite thing. Fair rides have been my favorite thing ever since I'm little. All I wanted to do was rides. And that's how I still am," says Dylan.

Eyewitness News met Dylan back in July at the Boonville-Oneida County Fair where he was showing off his carnival pieces to area residents.

He says that was his first time displaying his prized possessions. And although he won't be showing them off at the New York State Fair, he's still excited to go and check out the rides.

 "When he goes to fairs and stuff he looks at how the rides work. If it's something he can come home to and build, he'll try," says Jeffrey Grems, Dylan's father.

Dylan's dad says he introduced his son to K'NEX when he was just four-years-old.

7 years later and about 30 carnival rides under his belt, his secret? "Patience. Lots of patience. You can't just snap some pieces together and think you're done. You have to know what you're doing," says Dylan.

Although his siblings may not know what they're doing, Dylan says he lets them help him sometimes.

And just at 11-years-old, Dylan says he already knows what he wants to be when he grows up.

"An engineer. And I think that maybe I could design some of these rides and make some real ones," says Dylan.

And his family hopes the same.

"Hopefully he could get a job with Disneyland or Disney World when he gets older," says his dad.

 "I hope I'm around long enough that I can. I would love to see what he does in the future," says Dylan's grandfather, Robert Grems.
