The Rome man accused of raping a woman while holding her captive is facing new charges tonight. John Santoro is accused of calling the alleged victim in jail, violating a court order.

Not only that, but authorities say 25-year old Santoro escaped from the Oneida County Correctional Facility this afternoon, but was caught minutes later. Authorities say Santoro now faces a charge of escape in the first degree.

Santoro also faces a charge of aggravated criminal contempt. The basis of that charge - the phone call authorities say Santoro made from inside his jail cell to his alleged rape victim.

In Oneida County court today, Santoro rejected a plea offer of 3-and-a-half to 7 years in prison for that charge. At this point, it's still not clear if the charge will join previous charges when Santoro goes to trial. Santoro is due back in court on October 31st.
