State Police say 52-year-old Mark Scheidelman from Holland Patent is
charged with one count of Sex Abuse in the 1st degree, a class "D"
felony.
Scheidelman is currently the Trenton Town Supervisor and a former Oneida County GOP Chairman.
He is accused of sexually abusing a child younger than 11-years-old at his home. Officials say there are currently three potential victims ages ranging from seven to 12-years-old.
Police say a phone call was made by a family member of the child into the Child Advocacy Center. Authorities are not releasing the relationship between the alleged victim and Scheidelman.
Although police say it's still early into the investigation, the calls they have gotten in the past couple of days suggest Scheidelman may have been involved in this type of activity dating back to the late 1980s.
"We have information that Mr. Scheidelman was previously associated with the Boys Scouts and was involved in the community in other ways. We are very interested in speaking with anyone that may have had inappropraite contact at any age with Mr. Scheidelman," said Capt. Mark Lincoln of the Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
Police say there may be more charges pending. The Trenton Town office says they have no comment on the sex abuse charge.
There is no word yet of the status of Scheidelman's current position. He was arraigned and sent to the Oneida County Jail, but it's being reported he posted bail.
Scheidelman was arraigned in the Town of Floyd Court and remanded to the Oneida County Jail in lieu of $25,000.
Investigators are asking that anyone with information regarding Scheidelman to contact State Police at 366-6000, a 24 hour hotline or call the Child Advocacy Center at 732-3990.
