Utica residents may be noticing some familiar guests. Those guests are
hundreds of black crows flying across the sky each night. But this
winter, the city is hoping a new device can help rid these unwanted
visitors. Utica Department of Public Works used leftover grant funds to
purchase the bird blazer, a portable device that produces laser beams
and changing patterns to scare the birds away without hurting them. But
city officials say they'll need more machines to permanently get rid of
the birds.
"I need other mechanisms like sound machines, fire works, more lasers, a few others things that are out on the market. So we need to diversify our arsenal against these crows because they're a very smart bird. It requires man power which I'm a little short on so we're making do with what we can do at this point," says David Short, Commissioner of Utica Department of Public Works.
The bird blazer works within a 10 thousand -square-foot area. Short says they've already used it on Oriskany Street near Franklin Square.
