"We're going to Disney World!" It's a common phrase athletes shout after
winning the championship game. And tonight, we're introuducing you to a
group of Deerfield-Marcy girls shouting the same phrase. Eyewitness
News heads to the gym to meet a cheerleading squad whose making Mohawk
Valley history.
The Marcy-Deerfield Thunder, a Pop Warner Junior Pee Wee Cheer Team, has just become the first Tri-Valley team to ever make it to the nationals. And now, they're heading to Disney World.
"Marcy-Deerfield is going to Disney," says Jennifer Gagnon, team mom.
"We're the first team in the history of Tri-Valley to make it to nationals," says Lisa Weller, team coach.
Lisa Weller is the cheer coach and she says she couldn't be prouder.
"Really big for them. They've been practicing really hard since August, they practice 3 nights a week, basically practicing for this," says Weller.
"We've been going over the routine over and over, working on stunts, tumbling, jumps," says MacKenzie DeLeonardo, cheerleader.
"Everybody tries to make it to Disney and now, we've done it," says Gagnon.
How are the cheerleaders feeling about this?
"It's been really exciting and fun, competitions have been overwhelming with all the excitement," says Maygan Deep, cheerleader.
"We've done a lot of practice, a lot of work, and everybody's done a good job," says Jessica Crane, cheerleader.
And the parents says this is more than a win for the girls.
"It's a team that's dedicated and it is a big deal to our community," says Gagnon.
"It's a big area so people have to understand its the first team from this area, 50 years of doing this and it's the first team to make it this far," says Joe Witchley, team dad.
Now Weller says its all about having fun but these girls have their hearts set on the gold..
"Definitely getting it and winning first place," says Deep.
"We're gonna take first place in nationals," says Crane.
"And what's gonna be the best part? ...Winning," says DeLeonardo.
"2 claps and a punch for WUTR... WUTR!" says team.
And they'll be heading to Disney World this Saturday for the competition. But the team says they could use your help. it's an expensive trip and they're holding raffles and fundraisers all week long.
