Despite the strained job market, some area manufacturers say there are plenty of jobs - if you're looking in the right place.

There is high demand for skilled workers around the nation and Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi is asking the Board of Regents to develop a technical education diploma. A Rome manufacturer supports the idea; he says trade jobs can pay and provide a sustaining career.

"See these kids graduate from college and they're struggling to find work. I think if they were given a choice in high school, and were able to pursue a trade, it would certainly help the local economy here in Rome and I think it would help manufactures all through New York State," says Jack Butts, manager at Rome Specialty Company Inc.

"If a student doesn't want to go to college or isn't able to go to college, they can pursue a career in a skilled trade and that way when they graduate there are jobs open, out there, for them," says Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi, D-Utica.

Brindisi says the diploma will focus on skills needed for technical and manufacturing jobs.
