3 Lawmakers Are Sworn In To Office In Oneonta

January 1st means some public officials are starting a new term. Three
state lawmakers were sworn into office today, during a ceremony in
Oneonta. Senator James Seward, and Assembly members William Magee and
Claudia Tenney took the oath of office. Eyewitness News reporter Rachel
Polansky spoke with the legislators about their 2013 goals and
challenges.
says Kathleen Clark, Otsego County board.
"2 republicans and 1 democrat all fighting for the people in our district and that's important. The assembly is strongly democrat. We have democrat representative from this district and I think it's important that both sides work together."
"I'm tired of having our children and grandchildren have to leave New York state just to find a good paying job," says James Seward, Senator R-Oneonta.
Each legislator spoke about their 2013 goals and Senator Seward says increasing jobs is a top priority.
"Help foster job growth and economic development, making new york a more attractive and affordable place to do business," says Senator Seward.
"Trying to see what we can do to survive the fiscal cliff. My theme today was common sense to state government, and as a small business owner, that's my focus, is to try to build private sector jobs," says Claudia Tenney, Assemblywoman R-New Hartford.
Assemblyman Magee has a different goal.
"We need to do something to make the agriculture community more efficient and pay less in taxes to continue to produce the food we eat everyday," says William Magee, Assemblyman D-Nelson.
This new year also comes with new redistricting, and for Assemblywoman Tenney, this means she'll go from serving 2 counties to serving 7 counties.
"It is a huge jump. I'm gonna continue to fight and work hard and drive thousands of miles to get to as many people as I can," says Assemblywoman Tenney.
And Tenney's not the only one. Seward has gone from serving 7 counties to 9, but he says he's confident.
"I feel pretty good about where we are right now and the last couple of years working with the governor, and my colleagues, and the legislature in both parties, we've been able to get New York state in a better direction," says Senator Seward.
All legislators say they're ready to tackle the challenges that 2013 holds.
