There are additional opportunities now available for those facing tough times.

A new program is underway at Mohawk Valley Community College to help people find work.

A $300,000 grant has been announced to help people who qualify for food stamps.

A new job training program at MVCC will soon train people who may not have the opportunity otherwise. It is an effort to help those move off public assistance.

Oneida County Executive, Anthony Picente announced the state grant on Friday, September 23 to help people who qualify for food stamps.

Picente says it will be a continuing effort between Oneida, Herkimer, and Madison Counties working with MVCC to look at ways to train people in the community.

Fifty people will be selected for the entire year to participate in a 12 week program at Mohawk Valley Community College.

"We are going to be providing some hands on instructional training. They can either pick a construction trades track or a health care track," said Executive Director of Corporate and Community Education at MVCC, Franca Armstrong.

Training will take place in the school's classrooms and labs.

The program will provide certifications that many employers are looking for.

"This might give them the opportunity to get the jobs and skills that they need to help them advance themselves," said Armstrong.

Picente says he feels this will help provide an opportunity for those who may not otherwise get a job.

An interview process will be taking place to select those who qualify.

Picente also hopes this will be a positive outcome for the community.

"It can have as much of an impact as we put in it. The goal is obviously to get people into an educational program through MVCC that fits their needs. If we need to do that we need to invest in them as well and this way there is no excuse at the end of the day," he said.

The program is set to kick off October 17.
